How do vacuum-cleaners work?
Vacuum-cleaners are one of those indispensable items used in the house. As we know cleaners work by sucking up the debris and dirt. Well it is a little more than that and it doesn’t really create a vacuum which means no air at all.
What happens is that that an electric motor with fan pulls out air from the chamber within the machine which creates a low pressure area. This creates a pressure differential between this interior compartment and the outside with the outside being much greater.
This air pressure differential causes the air outside to flow into the vacuum cleaner interior carrying with it any dirt and debris. This flow is concentrated or directed inside by the suction head of the vacuum cleaner. The air with dirt flowing inside passes through a filter and is captured inside a bag or container and the air is suctioned back out again by the fan. The power of a vacuum cleaner is directly related to the efficiency and power of the fan and suction system.
The primary difference between an upright and canister vacuum is what you have to push around. Uprights have everything (motor, controls, bag) in a single unit that is pushed and pulled over the surface to be cleaned. A canister vacuum-cleaners places the most of its weight (vacuum motor, filters, bag, and cord winder) in a separate unit to make the power head lighter. With a long hose, the canister can be placed in the middle of the room and the power head moved around more easily. The advantage to this design is that larger and more powerful motors can be used. Both upright and canister vacuums typically have a spinning brush in the head that grabs debris and flings it toward the vacuum hose. All about vacuum-cleaners
