dryer makes a loud humming noise, then quits

My dryer starts normally enough, then begins making a humming noise.
The humming gets louder and louder until finally unit stops. The dryer then will not restart, just makes the loud humming/buzzing when you push the start button. In several hours, or the next day, it will start again, but repeat the same process.
