Don’t you hate to go back to hand washing your dishes in the kitchen sink when the dishwasher goes down. You can do something about that, and that means doing the maintenance. This means keeping it clean and smelling nice. Make sure you keep the filters and screens clean of food debris. If you don’t you will end up with damaged seals and pumps. The spray arms also can become clogged up and worth cleaning. Also keep an eye out for leaks from gaskets or seals that show impending failure. Be gentle with the door when you close it as the door closing mechanisms will get worn causing misalignment and leaks. As always listen to the machine and don’t ignore any abnormal noises that indicate something is loose or failing. If you want clean dishes and sparkling glasses the secret to proper dishwasher performance is hot water. The water must be at a minimum of 130o to wash effectively. If the water temperature is too low the dishes and glassware will have greasy films and detergent residues on them.

Water hardness makes a difference. Detergent dosing must always consider the hardness of the water in your particular area. Hard water areas will require greater detergent quantities and a rinse agent also to get the ideal results. Nothing cuts short the life of a dish washer than buildups of soap residues, grease and lime scale. Invest in a quality cleaner.

Use the vinegar test. If you take a cloudy glass and soak in vinegar for 5 minutes and the cloudiness disappears then the water is hard and you need to use more detergent. If it does not go, then this is called etching and you need to use less detergent and not prewash in your program.

What about the use of Gel Detergents in the dish washer? No one within the industry recommends them and they will reduce the life of your machine. The gels contain chlorine bleach which degrades the rubber seals. It also clouds and leaves a white film on glassware. They do not effectively clean the washer interior, they clog the detergent dispenser, they are ineffective in hard water regions. The bottom line is always use a powdered detergent. If you don’t then you will be calling your local serviceman a lot more than you need to.

Dishwashers – The machine will not operate

1. Always check that the power is on. The unit power indicator light will show this.

2. The door is not closed properly. If the door interlock switch is not activated nothing will work. Open and close the door and to make sure

3. The start switch hasn’t been pressed or turned.

4. You have not selected your dryer program

5. The cycle timer or program circuit board may be faulty

Dishwashers – The machine does not wash properly

1. The inlet water line is clogged and the filter or screen if installed is clogged with sediment

2. The inlet water solenoid valve is faulty or not lifting properly.

3. The drain valve is jammed and is leaking or fouled with debris.

4 The water temperature is not coming up to the right value and this may be due to faulty thermostat or heating elements

5. The washing detergent dosing system is not functioning properly.

6. The cycle timer or program circuit board may be faulty

Dishwashers – The machine has no water supply

1. The inlet water line is clogged and the filter or screen if installed is clogged with sediment

2. The inlet water solenoid valve is faulty or not lifting properly

3. The water level sensor or float switch is malfunctioning

4. The water overflow valve is jammed

Dishwashers – The machine will not drain down

1. The water drain pipe is clogged or fouled, this is usually at the bends in the piping.

2. The drain pump is faulty or fouled.

3. The drain valve is seized or has failed.

4. If the pump uses a drive belt this may have stretched or broken

5. The drive motor may have seized up or failed

6. The cycle timer or program circuit board may be faulty

Dishwashers – The drying cycle is not working normally

1. The thermostat or the heating element is faulty. If the heating element has failed the circuit breaker will usually trip or fuse blow.

2. The drying fan if installed may be faulty
