Coffee-maker repairs – How to save money!

The secret to good coffee - the coffee-maker!

One big secret to good coffee is keeping the coffee making equipment clean. No matter what type of machine or coffee pot you have, when minerals build up this will slow the coffee drip speed and produce bitter tasting coffee.

Make up a solution of 50% water and 50% white vinegar. Add this to the water reservoir and turn it on.

Allow half of it to pass through into the pot, turn it off and allow it to stand for another 30 minutes. Then run all solution through the machine and rinse with clean water.

Always clean your machine after each use to remove any coffee oils and residue using warm water and detergent, rinse and dry.

For those of you who use an aluminum percolator on your hotplates (I use a stainless one) remove any hard water deposits using a soap-filled steel wool pad, or running 1-2 tablespoons cream of tartar dissolved in water through it followed by through rinsing. Don’t baking soda or chlorine bleach on aluminum. Always use a percolator brush to clean the inside of the thin tube with warm and soapy water.

All about the coffee-maker and coffee grinders and how to care for and repair them About the coffee-maker, coffee-pots and espresso machines

The coffee-maker is essentially a water heating device that is used to brew coffee from the ground coffee. The two principal coffee-machine types are the drip machine and the percolator. The drip coffee maker heats the water and allows the hot water drips through the coffee basket and into a the pot below. The percolator coffee maker heats the water into steam. This pressurizes along with liquid up through a tube where it then falls through the coffee grounds within the basket and back to the main reservoir. The heating control uses a switch and thermostat to maintain the water temperature.
