An old Maytag

by Eleanor
(West Lafayette, IN)

I have a 28-yo Maytag washer that has apparently died. It was great while it lasted, but the repairman tells me the motor needs replacing as it is leaking oil and has other problems that make a burned-rubber smell.

He said his company sells refurbished Maytags (they are a well-regarded local company that has been in business a long time) and that if I really liked my Maytag, I might consider doing that. I'm wondering if the parts would be as high quality as the original Maytag parts? I know Maytag is really Kenmore or WHirlpool.

I can't afford a top-of-the line washer, and I don't think I really need one-- I just want it to work and be repair free for some time to come...in other words, I want a good value. Our children are grown, but we will likely have them visiting with families several times a year.

What are your recommendations for a good washer with a good repair reputation?

Thanks in advance! Eleanor G
